LUXURY FABRICS: VELVET

26/02/2014

In 1399 Richard II of England declared that no other fabrics but velvet may have touched his skin.

Its brightness, its touchy softness and lightness make velvet the emblem of richness and preciousness.

Velvet derives from the latin vellus , that’s to say fleece or cloak.

There are several variants of this wonderful cloth: corduroy, microvelvet fabric, stretch velvet , chiseled velvet, chenille, needlcord, velour, velveton, dor froiss jacquard velvet  but its main feature is  having on its plain  short-silk filaments and thick (united velvet) or little velvet rings (curly velvet).

Velvet was a very precious and appreciated fabric among aristocracy and artists in general (Tiziano used it a lot in his paintings) it still keeps on fascinating modern designers , stylists, interior designers or decorators. Velvet is for the beauty lovers and for sophisticated style amateurs, in a word.

Very sensual to the touch , it can be a very suitable choice for those who aspire to opulence and preciousness.

In order to exalt a very sophisticated elegance, velvet has come, once again, in the footlights of 2012-2013 fall-winter collections on world fashion runways. It still keeps on standing out in fashion field or furnishing fields  as well.

Corduroy, for example, it’s ideal for armchairs’, sofa’s and pillow’s coatings. For light colored or ash wood furniture, the perfect choice is a matching white or cream color velvet: at once, the setting will turn into a seemingly  relaxing and cozy Nordic one. Same shades are very suitable for a shabby chic oriented setting while the best choice for a retro’ setting will be a Terra Verde color.

Corduroy can be used in our bedroom, too, in the form of a lively red colored bedcover with matching pillows.

Due to its dimming features and for the natural elegance they give, velvet fabrics are perfectly suitable for CONTRACT field’s fabrics or window treatment curtains , too.

This yarn found its special place in our collections, too. The articles Itaca-Rodi-Paxos from Movida Collection are inspired by the name of the isles they are named after. Itaca is a very elegant and bright article. Strong and determined too, thanks to its damask ornaments recalling a venetian style. Its particular texture, the dichromatic contrast between the opaque  trimmed plain and the shiny embossed texture make its use so exclusive and refined. The wide chromatic range, from purple red to fuchsia, from ivory to dark brown, from light grey to blue or night blue (dark blue) gives the possibility to range from classical settings to contemporary ones.

Paxos article is full of embossed  dichromatic striped geometrical shapes, the protagonist of all the cloth, this exalting the elegance connected with the yarn’s  innate qualities. Matching with a refined style in stripes’ balanced choice, they give velvet a  particularly modern look, thus giving an homage to the refined venetian style.

Similarly, the same beauties we can see visiting Rodi, Greece, are enclosed in the simplest and most refined fabric ever, that’s to say, solid color velvet . Several different colors perfectly matching with Rodi’s and Itaca’s weaves.

Speaking about Contract sector we mentioned before, we have suggested Glove and Venus velvets.
